New Book Helps the Jobless Understand and Transcend Their Grief On the Way to a Better Career and Life

FORT COLLINS, Colo., Dec. 8, 2010 /PRNewswire/ — “Losing your job is like losing part of yourself,” says grief counselor and educator Alan D. Wolfelt, Ph.D.  “It can have a dramatic impact on your identity and self-worth.  In a culture where the first thing you may be asked is: ‘What do you do?’ there are constant reminders of the overwhelming loss you may be experiencing,” he adds.  Companion Press has released a new book by Wolfelt and coauthor Kirby J. Duvall, M.D., Healing After Job Loss:  100 Practical Ideas.  The book focuses on the person’s whole experience, not just on finding the next job.

“Holidays and family events can be difficult when you don’t have a job,” comments Wolfelt.  “When you are surrounded by people who want to celebrate, it can further your feelings of loss and loneliness.”

According to Wolfelt, job loss is a major life transition. It can bring people down or provide opportunities they never knew existed. Before they can move forward, they must integrate feelings of shock, disappointment, and fear that job loss brings. Once they accept this loss, and take a good look at themselves and their skills, hopes, and desires, they’ll see their way to a successful, new start.

With these 100 compassionate, practical tips, readers will cross over from the pain of losing their jobs to a purposeful place of setting intentions and carrying out a job search plan. Finally, they’ll be ready to transition to their next positions with grace and confidence.

Author, educator and grief counselor Dr. Alan Wolfelt serves as Director of the Center for Loss and Life Transition in Fort Collins, Colo. Appearances on the Oprah Winfrey Show, The Larry King Show, and the NBC Today Show offer further evidence of Dr. Wolfelt’s leadership in grief education. Dr. Kirby Duvall is a family physician and workplace medicine specialist.

Drs. Wolfelt and Duvall are also the authors of Healing Your Grieving Body: 100 Practical Ideas. Among Dr. Wolfelt’s other publications are The Journey Through Grief, Living in the Shadow of the Ghosts of Grief and The Mourner’s Book of Hope (all Companion Press).
