Type of Company

Amway and its sister products such as Artistry cosmetics, skincare products, and Nutrilite nutritional products have a long standing reputation as a world wide and industry network marketing leader which is why it’s consistently ranked as a top financial MLM producer.  Available in over 80 international markets, Amway allows the reseller to set his/her own prices based on how much profit one wants to make (above and beyond the wholesale cost).  Although the business model varies slightly from market to market, monthly performance bonuses range from 3% to 25% of business volume.

History

In 1959, Rich DeVos founded Amway Corp. with his lifelong friend and business partner, the late Jay Van Andel. Amway’s started with their first home care product, which today is called L.O.C.® (Liquid Organic Cleaner) Multi-Purpose Cleaner. Within a few short years, the company had more than 700 employees, over 200 exclusive products, and more than 100,000 Distributors.  Amway’s annual sales rapidly expanded, exceeding US $500,000 (estimated retail) for the first time.  By the mid ’70s, Amway trucks were traveling more than 3.25 million miles (approx 5.23 million kilometers) per year, shipping products to millions of Distributors. The company then expanded overseas, opening markets in eight countries on three continents.  In the 1980’s Amway added their water treatment product line, eSpring® and their cosmetics line ARTISTRY®.  The direct selling company now operates in more than 80 countries and territories around the world, and enables more than 3 million people to own independent businesses.

Executive Team

Steve Van Andel has been chairman of the $8.4 billion company since 1995, and is the oldest son of Amway co-founder Jay Van Andel, while President Doug DeVos oversees daily operations of the $8.4 billion company.  Together they share Amway’s Office of the Chief Executive.  All but one of the Executives have been with Amway for at least 18 years while most are career executives with the company.

Philanthropy

Founder, Rich DeVos and his wife, Helen, generously support hospitals, colleges and universities, arts organizations and Christian causes in their hometown of Grand Rapids, Mich., and they support numerous organizations in Central Florida. Amway’s most visible initiative is the Amway One by One Campaign for Children, which has helped more than 7 million children since it was launched in 2003. In North America, the One by One campaign supports numerous causes, including Boys & Girls Clubs of America and Easter Seals.

Research, Science and the Environment

Amway has a 50 year history of product innovation with over 800 patents and more than 600 patents pending. Over the past 50 years, Amway has been recognized for manufacturing excellence, environmental concern, and commitmentis to safety and health. Because the manufacturing is done in-house and some products are even grown by them, quality is assured and exclusivity is retained.  Amway’s vitamins are made from ingredients grown on their own certified organic farms and their Home Care line of Products are clean for the environment – stating that their home care products were green before green was popular.

Investment/Opportunity Cost

At the time of this writing, we have found that the initial starter kit averages about $100.

Investment/Retail Cost Comparison

Amway’s exclusive products have been compared to retail products based on price and volume.  But the overall consensus is that because the products work as described and are deemed better quality than their counterparts, the cost vs. product is a wash.  Many of the independent studies found that a majority of Amway’s products (that can also be purchased in a retail outlet) were more expensive than retail cost.

I have used some of the stuff in the past, most of it was pretty good. But I think people shy away from a lot of home sales because of the feeling of pressure to buy.
