Type of Company

Based out of Provo, Utah in 1984 three founders came together to build a company that would combine innovative personal care products with ingredients that subscribed to the philosophy of “all of the good, none of the bad”.  Nu Skin, who self proclaims themselves “As the premier anti-aging company”, sells more than 200 products under three distinct brands: Nu Skin, Pharmanex and Big Planet in over 48 international markets.  Now publicly traded, the three founders still hold high ranking positions in the company and are working together to donate over 200 million meals in 2010 as part of their Nourish The Children project that started in the summer of 2002.  Working with an expert in child malnutrition in third-world countries, Nu Skin developed VitaMeal to provide a vegetarian, non-dairy formula for malnourished children which provides them with a balance of carbohydrates, protein, fat, fiber and many other nutrients for developing children.  Nu Skin developed an anti-aging formula with world leading scientists to produce a genetically researched product that targets Youth Gene Clusters, which are functional groups of genes that regulate how we appear to age.  With this science Nu Skin is able to reset these Youth Gene Clusters to their youthful patterns of activity with their ageLOC science based products.

History

Nu Skin was amazingly started by a brother and sister, Blake Roney and his sister Nedra Roney. They also had a friend Sandi Tillotson. Blake had just graduated from Brigham Young University in 1984, when they decided to start a business. They had only $5,000 among them to start their personal care product. That was then, and look at the company now. In 1996, after some incredible growth, the company went public and was listed in the NY Stock Exchange

Executive Team

Philanthropy

Nu Skin Enterprises saw the need to formalize its philanthropic endeavors by creating an official foundation. The Nu Skin Force for Good Foundation was chartered to emphasize support for children, and continued to be funded from Nu Skin Epoch product donations. From its first project to support the traditions and environment of families living in the Falealupo village in Western Samoa to the now hundreds of humanitarian projects supported in more than 50 countries, the Nu Skin Force for Good Foundation is committed to making a difference for thousands, if not millions, of children for generations to come. Nu Skin Enterprises provides for all overhead and administrative costs of the Nu Skin Force for Good Foundation, ensuring that all donations go directly to those receiving aid.

Research, Science and the Environment

Nu Skin has established a 25-year legacy of product innovation and their research agreements with Stanford University and LifeGen Technologies add significant fuel to their scientific engine. Researchers at Stanford have focused on profiling gene expression during human development and aging, and have also explored novel modes of gene control in aging skin. Nu Skin’s agreement with Stanford aims to increase the understanding of fundamental aging mechanisms in human beings by translating insights from basic science into human application. The agreement also includes access to Stanford’s expertise in dermatological clinical trials.

Investment/Opportunity Cost

You can buy the products online at a retail price, or you can sign up either as a distributor or a purchaser. If you prefer to sign up as a purchaser, you are entitled to buy their product at about 40% discount. If you sign up as a distributor, you will earn commissions by signing up other people to Nu Skin to buy their products. In order to join the program, Nu Skin requires the applicants to pay $35 registration fee and an annual fee of $20.

Retail Cost Comparison

With regards to their products, there are many allegations that they are expensive. And because they distribute a wide variety of products, just like any other company, there are products that are good, some are not effective, and there are also some that are overpriced and not worth buying.
