Partylite (Blyth) is a $650 million business that specializes in fragrance candles and decorative accessories to be sold in a party plan marketing style.

Blyth was founded in 1976 by young entrepreneur, Bob Goergen, and three colleagues.  The team purchased Valley Candle in Brooklyn and acquired Colonial Candle of Cape Cod.  The company’s web site leaves a lot of questions as one page states Colonial Candle was acquired in 1990 and another states less than a year after the 1976 purchase of Valley Candle.  Acquired along with Colonial Candle was a small division called Partylite.

Partylite was a subsidiary of a company started by Mabel Baker in the early 1900’s, a schoolteacher that began crafting candles from the wild bayberries.  The name and role of Partylite was established in April 1973; 8 years after the death of 94 year old Baker.  Partylite’s company history states they were acquired by Blyth in 1990.  Blyth has since expanded the division and added Two Sisters Gourmet by Partylite and ViSalus Sciences which offers supplements, energy drinks and weight management products.

Partylite not only cares candles and home decor but they’ve branched out into the bath and body care market with products like foot scrubs, soaps, linen sprays, and stuffed bears that smell like lavender.

HOW IT WORKS:

Partylite ‘Best Burn’ candles reportedly provide 70-80 hours of fragrance, they provide unscented tapered candles, ball candles that retain form, birthday candles, battery operated candles, scented oils, and even auto scent diffusers.  Along with their candle and fragrance collection, the Two Sisters Gourmet by Partylite adds the ability to purchase bread mixes, dessert mixes, preserves, condiments, and seasonings.

Blyth is home to over 1,300 employees and is distributed by more then 68,000 distributors. Blyth’s headquarters is located in Plymouth, Massachusetts and it operates in 17 different countries including U.S., Sweden, Poland, Mexico, and more.

Partylite distributors make 25% of their sales and buy their products at 50% off.

Average start up cost: $350 (taken out of 1st party sales) + $10 per month for web site

So, what happens if you don’t sell enough to cover your starter kit?

My mother sold Partylite products for a while, we got a lot of very nice candles and fixtures out of it, but I don’t think she was able to make a real profit off of it. Great products, but I don’t know that their compensation plan is the best.
